Hal R. Varian is Chief Economist bij Google. Hij startte in mei 2002 als consultant en was betrokken bij vele aspecten van het bedrijf, waaronder veilingontwerp, econometrie, financiën, bedrijfsstrategie en openbaar beleid.
Daarnaast is hij emeritus hoogleraar aan de University of California, Berkeley bij drie afdelingen: business, economie en informatiemanagement. Hij ontving zijn S.B. diploma van MIT in 1969 en zijn MA en Ph.D. van UC Berkeley in 1973. Hoogleraar Varian heeft tal van artikelen gepubliceerd in economische theorie, econometrie, industriële organisatie, openbare financiën en de economie van informatietechnologie.
